Tuning the
system will be an ongoing process for the first few weeks. As
the speakers break in and your musical taste will quickly
change. You will begin to savor the flavor of sound quality.
The sound will keep getting better over time.
We will give you some basic settings,
but you will need experiment and end up tuning for your ears/toy. A
big consideration is your head unit. We initially chose the
9885 because of the great price and the built in high
pass filter. We ended with the xyz, becuse of the better
face plate design. Plus it has a low pass filter. A high pass filter
is much more important to keep low signals from damaging your door
speakers / tweeters. We set our high pass filter @ 80hz on the
stereo itself and about the same on the amp. The filter will keep
the head unit from sending bass signals below 80Hz to the door
speakers. It provides better sound and protects the speakers from
damaging frequencies.
Summary: Filters/Xovers: Set
your high pass filter on the stereo to 80Hz. Set your xover on
your speaker amp (passenger) to hair below
80Hz. Set
your xover on your subwoofer amp (driver) to about 80hz. If you
stereo does not have a high pass filter this will act as your
filter. However, the amp filter will not be as good as the filter on the
unit. Gain: Set
the gain on both your amps to number 4. In this case we have a 4 volt output from our head
unit. This will be adjusted in a couple of weeks as we will
not apply enough power to the speakers for at least two weeks. We are
big on break in period. Please note if you set the gain too high the
amp will go into protection mode. To much gain is not a good
thing and reduces sound quality. We will have a final tuning section later
in these instructions.
Output Bass
Boost Level:
Bass boost levels can
range from +6dB to +18dB, depending on the amplifier. You will
notice the boost when experimenting with this adjustment.
Since
we installed a remote boost controller for our subwoofer amp we
turned the bass boost all the way up on the subwoofer amp. In our
other amp we set it about of the way up and adjusted later by ear.
You will not want to much bass coming from your door speakers. But
you have to find the balance for your mid bass. This is done by ear
and your preference.
In this
picture you can see the screws that hold the crossovers in place. Bet you did not even
notice them till you read
