Can I upgrade the just the speakers in my Toyota Tundra Equipped with JBL Audio?
We advise against replacing only the speakers in Toyota Tundra models equipped with the JBL audio system. The factory JBL amplifier, situated beneath the seat, employs a non-standard configuration. Unlike conventional multi-channel amplifiers, the stock JBL amplifier utilizes high-pass, low-pass, and band-pass filters, which can negatively impact the performance of aftermarket speakers.
For instance, the front door speakers are mid-bass drivers receiving a band-pass filtered signal between 40Hz and 700Hz. Replacing these with coaxial speakers often results in undesirable audio artifacts, such as tweeter clipping. This occurs because the amplifier’s low crossover frequency delivers a signal that the coaxial speaker’s built-in crossover cannot effectively process. The integrated tweeter then attempts to reproduce frequencies below its intended range, leading to distortion.
