Part 2: How to build a quality sound system by understanding the audible frequency range.

How to select, upgrade and install speakers

On a budget, blew a speaker or looking for a very nice setup? The quickest way to better sound is by upgrading your stock speakers. You will probably want to choose one of two paths . . If you reviewed the videos on building a complete audio system and heading that route check out the section below on Looking for great sound. If you just want to do a basic upgrade, whether you go with our suggested speakers or other brands, keep in mind MANY of our customers start with higher end component speakers and then add / build on to their system as their budget allows. Planning your sound system at the beginning helps to avoid buying (double spending) a whole new set of speakers down the road.

Basic Upgrade or Repair:

This is probably the most common path for our customer base. You just want something that sounds a little better than stock or simply replacing worn out speakers in their 5 year old Toyota FJ Cruiser.. If you go this route, you will probably want to purchase some low power speakers that can handle around 2 – 40 watts & have a sensitivity rating of at least 90dB.

More than likely you are planning on powering your new speakers with your stock or aftermarket stereo (head unit), so you will be very limited on power. You will be hard pressed to find stock or aftermarket head unit that provides more than 16 – 20 watts RMS to the door speakers. This means you will want to select speakers that require a small amount of power to produce sound. However, If you plan to add an amplifier later, you will NOT want to purchase this type of speaker.

Pioneer’s TS line fits the bill and is a very inexpensive that seems to do a pretty good job with our customers. They work well with our speaker adapters for your Toyota FJ Cruiser..

Using our speaker adapters in your FJ Cruiser. , a novice installer can complete a basic speaker install in 15 – 45 minutes.

Looking for Great Sound:

If you are looking to significantly increase the sound quality in your Toyota FJ Cruiser., you will want to install component speakers in the front doors and an amplifier(s). Increasing the power by adding an amp is not to make the system perform “loud”. It is intended to properly power your drivers (speakers) to their full potential. When speakers are provided the power they need, you will hear the clarity in music like never before. Don’t get me wrong, loud is by product, but we strive for quality over volume.

A component speaker is a set of car audio drivers matched for optimal sound quality. Typically a pair of tweeters and mid-bass drivers are matched with a crossover to limit the frequency range each speaker must accurately reproduce. Component speakers drivers are physically separated so the tweeter, which is very directional, can be placed in an optimal position, usually facing the listener, while the larger mid-bass driver can be placed where there is room, often in the lower front of the car doors. Component speaker pairs are offered by high-end speaker manufacturers. We often like to place these in the Front doors of each vehicle. Components by nature and design tend to provide much better sound quality.

Example 6.5″ Component Speakers

The CTX65CS is an amazing bang for buck speaker. This speaker will outperform component sets costing twice the price. They are rated for 100 watts RMS per speaker. We regularly power them with 125 watts and they simply perform unbelievably for their price point. We have been authorized dealer for Image Dynamics for over 5 years. This is our number one selling speaker. We get nothing but amazing feedback on this speaker. Sometimes we have a hard time keeping them in stock. We offer these with custom sized speaker adapters, custom tweeter mounts and the hardware to get them installed in your FJ Cruiser..

Image Dynamics CTX65CS Component Speakers

Image Dynamics CTX65CS Component Speakers

The XS65 is one of my (Rob) personal favorites. I have been doing car audio for longer than I care to mention. Have owned MANY top end brands. These speakers easily outperform MOST of the “top name” manufactures. They are a bit tough on the pocketbook, but they provide some of the best SQ that money can buy. Honestly, most people will love the CTX65CS above. But after you listen to these for a few days, you will notice an very distinct difference. I have these in ALL my personal rides. We offer these with custom sized speaker adapters, custom tweeter mounts and the hardware to get them installed in your FJ Cruiser..

A coaxial speaker for automobiles are 2- or 3-way loudspeakers in which the tweeter or the tweeter and a mid-range driver, are mounted in front of the mid-bass woofer on the same axis. The advantage of this design is the ability to use a smaller area, hence their popularity in car audio. The low frequency sound waves from the woofer are not reduced too much by the drivers in their path. We often place these in the rear doors to provide the rear passenger a better listening experience at lower volumes. Many of our budget minded customers opt for a coaxial speaker solution in the from and rear doors of their FJ Cruiser..

Example 6 x9″ & 6.5″ Coaxial Speakers

The CTX69 is very popular with customers that want to do a basic upgrade. The 6×9 will provide a bit more mid bass than a 6.5″ speaker. Plus this speaker can handle 100 watts RMS to each speaker. This speaker used with a mini amplifier will perform very well for customers looking to do a basic upgrade. We offer these with custom sized speaker adapters, custom tweeter mounts and the hardware to get them installed in your FJ Cruiser..

We often recommend that the CTX65 be used in the rear doors of your Toyota FJ Cruiser.. They handle 100 watts with no problem and sound amazing for a coaxial speaker. We offer these with custom sized speaker adapters, custom tweeter mounts and the hardware to get them installed in your FJ Cruiser.

How to add amplifier to stock stereo head unit

These days Toyota is including a ton of great features in their factory stereos. At the time of this post, many of the stock units have Bluetooth, Internet search capability, navigation (GPS), steering wheel controls, IPod and auxiliary inputs, HD radio, satellite radio and the list just goes on and on . . So it really does not make sense to replace the stock head unit when they include all these great features. Plus a car stereo that looks factory or “stealth” is more likely to detour thieves. After a large number of requests from Toyota Tacoma Double Cab Double Cab owners we decided to produce a product that makes it easy to keep your factory stereo while paving the road to AMAZING sound quality. The ReCurve EZQ makes it fast and easy to add an amp(s) to your FJ Cruiser..

How to add a subwoofer to your stock stereo

It often seems like many people equate subwoofers with crazy sound systems they have seen at car shows or even at the local audio shop. But truth be told; a subwoofer is a dedicated low-frequency driver that fills in the deep, rich bass that speakers are unable to reproduce. Subwoofers are specialized, and not intended to reproduce midrange or high frequencies. They are designed to reproduce the deepest notes in the audio frequency range that is audible to humans. Subwoofers usually handle frequencies below 100 Hz or so. Also by lifting the burden of reproducing bass, your speakers will operate much more efficiently. All kinds of instruments, including voices, can be heard more clearly.

Be sure to watch the video on building a complete audio system.

Your sub and speakers should be matched for optimum sound quality. We often receive emails from customers asking: how can I add a subwoofer to my stock system. Immediately I cringe and think WHY?? Would someone add a subwoofer to a system with the stock speakers? Well, over the years I have learned some people just want a bass and don’t care if they can hear the rest of the music. Or many just start with a sub and then build from there. So if you are interested in adding a sub to your stock system, be sure to check out the ReCurve EZQ. We have had a large number of customers add a subwoofer with the aid for the ReCurve EZQ and a suggested amplifier.

Things to consider: If you are planning to start out with a subwoofer, chances are you will upgrade your door speakers at some point down the road. This is is where some planning will coming in to play. Example, consider getting a 5 channel amplifier that will drive your sub woofer and door speakers. It will cost a bit more to get a quality 5 channel amp. However when it comes time to upgrade your speakers the process will be much easier. For more information check out the section on how to select an amplifier.

Selecting a subwoofer for a FJ Cruiser. can be a tough choice. Sure there are tons of subs, but not many will sound very good. There is not much room behind the seats of a FJ Cruiser.. So the sub brand that worked in trunk of your old car, will probably not fit or perform very well in the FJ Cruiser. . . subwoofers require airspace and proper tuning for optimum sound reproduction. Most subs provide subwoofer enclosure specs to perform well. Sure you can slap a box in your truck and get some bass. But if you are looking for quality bass, then you need to be more careful when choosing what will work in your FJ Cruiser.. We offer small sealed boxes or for those looking for deep rich bass, we also offer ported solutions for your FJ Cruiser..

When selecting a subwoofer you need to know the following:

Will it fit?

What is the top mount depth?

What is the mounting diameter?

What are the airspace requirements for the sub to perform properly?

How do I wire the sub, what does ohms mean?

Is it a single or dual voice coil?

What is the final load (ohm) that will be presented to the amp?

What load (ohm) does subwoofer operate at?

How do I wire the sub properly?

Should my subwoofer box be ported or sealed?

Do you recommend shallow mount subs?

What do you think about self powered tube style subs.

Answers:

  1. As you are aware there is not much room behind the seat of your FJ Cruiser.. The top mount depth of speakers and subwoofers refers to the height of the subwoofer. So you need to ensure that your subwoofer will fit in the box & fit behind the seat of your Toyota FJ Cruiser.. The mounting diameter refers to the “hole” the a speaker or subwoofer will fit into. A 10” subwoofer is 10” on the front side. The back side has a basket that is smaller than the front side. Most common size for a 10” sub is a 9.1” mounting hole.

  2. Just about every subwoofer will provide Thiele-Small parameters. The short version, the T&S parameters assist box builders in matching the subwoofers frequency response / performance. This really is not a huge deal for sealed subwoofer boxes. For sealed subwoofer boxes you just need to know the air space required for the subwoofer to perform at its optimum. Ported subwoofer boxes are a whole different set of complex issues.

  3. Subwoofers come in a number of wiring configurations. This is done to allow end users to add multiple subwoofers and control the “load” the amplifier will be presented. Load (ohms) in a nutshell is the resistance in the flow of the electrical current – in the case of speakers / subwoofers it is dependent on the voice coils and how they were manufactured. . Car speakers generally come with a 4 ohm load. Subwoofers generally come with a 2 or 4 ohm load. NOTE: there are many wiring options to allow different loads. Now before you get all nervous and run off, we make this really easy for you. Generically speaking most full size subs (not shallow mount) will have two voice coils. Since most folks don’t care about ohms or coils, we will provide pictures and give you options that make it easy. For you guys that want more info on this, click here. This page will provide lots more info on subwoofers.

How to choose and why add an amplifier

If you are looking to significantly increase the sound quality in your FJ Cruiser., you will need to add an amplifier(s). Many people equate amplifiers with CRAZY car audio systems they have seen at car shows. However, to get the most impact and and best sound quality in your car, you will need an amplifier. You just need NOT go crazy with overpowered monsters that you may have seen in the past. We generally recommend 2 levels of power for MOST (not all) of our customers.

As mentioned earlier most stock and aftermarket head units will generally provide less than 20 (closer to 14) watts RMS. So we highly recommend providing more power to your aftermarket speakers. Level One – 100 watts to each speaker and 500 – 800 watts to a subwoofer(s). Level two – 50 watts to each door speaker and around 300 watts to a subwoofer.

Increasing the power is not to make the system perform “loud”. It is intended to properly power your drivers (speakers) to their full potential. When speakers are provided the power they need, you will hear the clarity in music like never before. However, when powering the speakers at 100 watts, “loud” is a by product. At 100 watts to each speaker this is great for “tailgating”. You will be the life of the party with your doors open and music providing crystal clear music. If you watched the videos on how to create a great sound system you will want to add a subwoofer. Powering subwoofers is done a bit differently from your speakers.

Amps come in a number of configurations. We generally recommend 3 types of amps. 4 channel, 5 channel and Mono.

1 channel represents one speaker or subwoofer output. So a four channel amp, can provide output for four speakers. A monoblock (mono) amp is generally used to power subwoofer(s). It is not uncommon to have one 4 channel amp for your 4 speakers and 1 mono amp for your subwoofer(s).

We generally like to recommend a 5 channel amp. A five channel amp is generally used to power 4 speakers and 1 or more subwoofers. A good quality 5 channel amp will save you time and money over two amps. We have been using the Exile Javelin 5 Channel Amp on a number of our installations. This amplifier provides 100 watts to each speaker & 800 watts to subwoofer(s). One amp has many benefits, like running one power wire to the battery, don’t have to worry about power distribution and usually easier two ground than two amps. Also need to mention that less wiring and parts are required.

We still use 4 channel and mono amp setups on larger systems. Most of our customers are not looking to wake the dead with their sounds system. But if you want to go that route, send us a message and we can make some suggestions.

Choosing amps can be difficult. There are so many brands. I highly recommend staying with good quality amps. If the price of the amp you are looking at is MUCH lower than other comparable amps, chances are that amp will not perform as stated. Plus when you purchase a quality amp they will generally last for many years.

If you decide to add an amp to your Toyota Tacoma Double Cab, we also offer the most comprehensive installation kits. Most amp install kits only have a few of the many parts and cabling you will need to get your system installed properly. After years of installing literately hundreds of FJ Cruiser., we have developed products to save you tons of time and money. Before you purchase an amp kit, but sure to compare the contents of our FJ Cruiser. install kit.

A common question we get daily, “where do I mount my amp(s)”? If you have seen our demo videos, you can see we generally recommend that the amp(s) is installed under the driver seat. This leads to the next question, “which amps will fit”? Well, that is why we listed the amps below. Not only do they provide good clean power, they will fit in our recommended location(s).

Simple Speaker / Head Unit Upgrade Option

This upgrade is fairly easy to accomplish will not break the bank and still provide great bang for buck sound. First you will want to select a new head unit.

In addition to a new head unit, we are going to recommend the Alpine KTP445U an inline amp that requires very little wiring and will provide over 2x the power of most stock head units and after market stereos (head unit). This amp will really bring your speakers to life and still provide a path to a complete audio system if you desire to do so as time or budget allows. This setup will provide an upgrade that is substantially better than a stock system or aftermarket head unit.

Better Sound By Understanding the Audio Frequency Range

Complete Audio Sound Quality Sound System

If you are interested in a full sound system, please take some time and review the following videos. . .they will ;explain what it takes to create great sound in your Toyota Tacoma Double Cab. Many of our customers are first time installers and have successfully installed a full sound system by watching our videos and using the products we develop to make the installations go much quicker and easier than hunting around for the right parts and pieces you will need to get your system installed. When you install a system in your Tacoma Double Cab using our kits, you will save yourself countless runs to the parts or audio store for the “right” part. For example, most amp kits do not include the correct size ring terminals. This leaves you cutting and crimping heavy gauge wire. This task can be very difficult without the proper tools. This is just one small example of the benefits of using one of our packaged systems. I can assure you no one else has installed and documented more Toyota Tacoma Double Cab installs than tacotunes.com

How to select an after-market stereo (head unit)

The head unit is like the “brain” of the entire system. Head units at the time we are typing this have a huge number of features that include; Bluetooh, Pandora, iHeart , Ipod, satellite, HD Radio, USB and many other interfaces. Many also include backup cameras, navigation and many more features so where do you start? If you are looking to build a quality sound system and plan for future growth, I have yet to mention any of the features you need to be sure you new head unit has incorporated as standard features.

When building a sound system you want to be sure your new head unit has the following features:

  1. High Pass Filter

  2. Low Pass Filter

  3. Front Preamp Output RCA

  4. Rear Preamp Output RCA

  5. Subwoofer Preamp Output RCA

  6. Onboard EQ

Please note that you are able to use a head unit missing some of these features, but if you are looking to build a nice system, it is best if you can control certain functions and settings at the head unit. If you are an audiophile, you will be probably be looking for a few more features, but then again why are you here? You already know all this stuff 😉

If you don’t plan to build or add on to your system later, you can get away with just about any head unit that has whatever features you want.

Don’t’ forget if you want to add a new aftermarket head unit / stereo, you will need to purchase steering control interface if you want your steering wheel functions to continue to operate.
